Dr. Craig Hogan, APS Chair, and members made introductions around the table.

Dr. Hogan briefly reviewed meeting processes, and reminded APS of its role as advising the NASA Advisory Council (NAC), restricting committee to advising on Astrophysics (AP) science at NASA. Committee members introduced themselves.

(166.0 kB) Astrophysics Division Senior Review 2010 – Call for Proposals: NASA’s Science Mission Directorate (SMD) periodically conducts comparative reviews of its Operating Missions to maximize the scientific return from these projects within finite resources. NASA uses the findings from these comparative reviews to define an overall implementation strategy and give programmatic direction to the missions and projects concerned for the next two fiscal years.

(383.9 kB) NASA EARTH SCIENCE SENIOR REVIEW 2009: The Senior Review Panel (SRP) first convened on April 25-27, 2007 to evaluate 13 ongoing NASA satellite missions: ACRIMSAT, Aqua, Aura, CALIPSO, CloudSat, Earth Observing Mission-1, GRACE, ICESat, Jason-1, QuikSCAT, SORCE, Terra and TRMM.

(144.6 kB) 2009 Astrophysics Division Government Performance and Result Act: The NAC Astrophysics Subcommittee finds that all outcomes in sub- goal 3D (3D.1 -- 3D.4) were fully met by NASA this year and assigns a rating of "green" to each one.

First, the subcommittee was asked to provide an assessment of Heliophysics science performance for FY2009. This assessment is to be included in the yearly Performance and Accountability Report (PAR) submitted as part of NASA’s yearly Government Performance Results Act (GPRA) requirements.

(608.5 kB) 2009 10 Meeting Report: Kepler held an initial science press conference on 6 August, Chandra marked its ten-year anniversary, the Fermi Gamma Ray Space Telescope released first year science results, and the Wide-field Infrared Survey Explorer (WISE) mission is set for a 7 December launch. Dr. Morse noted also the upcoming Women in Astronomy and Space Science conference. The critical design review (CDR) for the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST) mission is due to be held in Spring 2010, and NASA is gearing up for the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) 20-year anniversary in April 2010.

(464.8 kB) 2009 09 Meeting Minutes: Dr. James Green, Director of the Planetary Science Division (PSD), recounted recent activities. The vacancy for Planetary Protection Officer (PPO) has been closed; a candidate has been selected for thus position and will be announced soon. PSD is preparing to advertise for a new Astrobiology lead (position currently held by Dr. Mary Voytek). The Planetary Instrument Development PIDDP has been placed temporarily under Ms. Lisa May, due to the departure of Dr. Jon Rall. Dr. Natasha Johnson has departed for Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC).
